A melody can bring back a person. That person can lead to a place. When an exhibition provided only pedestal space, I fabricated a stand that allowed the framed sculpture to be displayed from a pedestal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThat practical solution eventually helped the idea evolve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eSmaller versions of the concept followed, designed to sit naturally on a desk or shelf. Yet somewhere beyond our shoreline lives an animal that most of us will never see, and one that could disappear if we are not careful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThat became \u003cem\u003eEchoes of the Gulf\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eI built the whale from reclaimed automotive and industrial components, materials from the same human world that has transformed so much of the environment around us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThere is an intentional contradiction in that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eDiscarded pieces of our industrial world have been given another life in the form of an animal fighting to keep its own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eEchoes of the Gulf\u003c\/em\u003e is also a \u003cstrong\u003e4D sculpture\u003c\/strong\u003e. Movement is incorporated into the artwork, allowing the sculpture to change as it is experienced rather than remaining completely static.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThat movement matters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eA living whale moves.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eIt travels through the Gulf. It surfaces.
