The Story Behind Espinas y Abrazos

They began as two separate cacti.

Each growing on its own beneath the same desert sun.

Then they found one another.

Their roots came together, their lives intertwined, and as they continued to grow, their two forms created the shape of a heart.

From that union came a family.

Their children rise from them, held high toward the sun by the two who brought them into the world.

Beneath the family is stone.

It represents the hardships that inevitably become part of a life built together. The difficult years. The unexpected storms. The times when the ground beneath you doesn't seem particularly forgiving.

A cactus understands that kind of life.

It survives heat, drought, harsh ground, and long periods without what it needs. It carries thorns because life in the desert demands them.

But it still grows.

And these two don't grow alone anymore.

They have intertwined their lives. They protect what they created. They lift the next generation higher, giving their children the opportunity to reach toward the light.

That's Espinas y Abrazos.

Thorns and embraces.

Because a family can have both.

There will be storms. There will be difficult ground. There will probably be a few thorns along the way.

But when the roots remain bound together, the family continues to grow.

Industrial Composition & Artistry

Espinas y Abrazos is handcrafted from reclaimed automotive and industrial components, steel, and natural stone.

The two primary cactus forms intertwine as they rise, creating the silhouette of a heart through their relationship to one another and the negative space between them. Smaller upward-reaching forms represent their children, lifted toward the sun and the life ahead of them.

The sculpture rises from a natural stone and mechanical foundation. The contrast between stone and reclaimed steel reinforces the relationship between the natural desert landscape and the industrial materials used throughout the sculpture.

The metal is finished with clearcoat to preserve the character and texture of the reclaimed materials.
