The Story Behind Echoes of the Gulf
There is a whale that lives nowhere else in the world but the Gulf.
The Rice's whale is one of the most endangered whales on Earth. Fewer than 100 are believed to remain, living year-round in the waters of the Gulf.
That stopped me.
Living in South Texas, the Gulf has always been part of the world around me. Yet somewhere beyond our shoreline lives an animal that most of us will never see, and one that could disappear if we are not careful.
That became Echoes of the Gulf.
I built the whale from reclaimed automotive and industrial components, materials from the same human world that has transformed so much of the environment around us.
There is an intentional contradiction in that.
Discarded pieces of our industrial world have been given another life in the form of an animal fighting to keep its own.
Echoes of the Gulf is also a 4D sculpture. Movement is incorporated into the artwork, allowing the sculpture to change as it is experienced rather than remaining completely static.
That movement matters.
A living whale moves.
It travels through the Gulf. It surfaces. It disappears beneath the water and returns.
I can take discarded steel and give it another purpose.
We may not be able to do the same with a species once it is gone.
That's why I called the sculpture Echoes of the Gulf.
I hope the Rice's whale never becomes merely an echo of what once lived there.
