What kind of creature would be powerful enough to pull the chariot of a god?
HippoKampus: Sea Racer began without a story.
Artist Enrique Del Angel simply wanted to create another sculpture inspired by Greek mythology and began building a large seahorse. As the form developed, a question changed the direction of the piece: If Poseidon was a god, wouldn't the creatures pulling his chariot have to be the best of the best?
They would need to be the fastest workhorses in the ocean.
That thought led Del Angel to a collection of race-car components in his studio. Parts engineered for speed became the natural material for a mythical creature built for speed, bringing Greek mythology and motorsport engineering together in a single sculpture.
The movement of HippoKampus was designed around that idea. Its body leans slightly forward, while its fins angle forward as though cutting through the water and minimizing drag. Mechanical components form the body of the seahorse, transforming parts once associated with speed on land into a creature imagined for speed beneath the sea.
HippoKampus: Sea Racer is also a 4D sculpture, adding another dimension of movement to the work.
