Ikarus: The Day After

Every version of the ancient myth ends the same way. Ikarus flies too close to the Sun, his wings fail, and he falls into the sea. History remembers the tragedy. It rarely pauses to consider the one left behind.

Ikarus: The Day After imagines what followed through the eyes of Daedalus, the father who built the wings. Rather than allowing his son's final flight to become his only memory, he chooses to imagine the life Ikarus never had, the man he might have become, the dreams he might have fulfilled, and the freedom he was meant to know.

Viewed from one side, the sculpture evokes the Sun that witnessed the flight. Turn it, and the perspective changes. The work becomes a meditation on memory. The circle is no longer only the Sun; it becomes the passage of time, the quiet space where grief gives way to hope, and where love refuses to let a life be defined by its final moment.

Forged from reclaimed steel and accented with heat-colored wings, Ikarus: The Day After transforms discarded industrial materials into a reflection on love, loss, and the enduring bond between a parent and child.

A Father's Benediction

Dear Ikarus,
As I watch you grow,
I can only wonder,
how your life will go.

Day, after day,
I see the sun rise,
And I see the sun fall.

I want to give my love
and all I know.

But all I can give you is
your wings,
your freedom,
and the courage to let you go.
