The Story Behind Sal y Fierro

Salt and iron.

Two simple elements. Two very different roles in the human experience.

Salt preserves.

Iron is forged.

Sal y Fierro was inspired by two biblical passages that speak to those ideas.

In Matthew 5:13, we are told:

“You are the salt of the earth.”

And in Psalm 66:10:

“For you, O God, tested us; You refined us like silver.”

One speaks of calling, of what we are meant to carry into the world.

The other speaks of trial, of the fire and pressure through which we discover what we are made of.

Between them swims the seahorse.

Constructed from reclaimed automotive bolts and pushrods joined with silver solder, the seahorse clings tightly to a coral reef formed from discarded sheet-metal drops. Beneath it rests a natural stone, grounding the mechanical sculpture in something far older than the materials from which it was made.

A seahorse does not overpower the ocean.

It endures it.

When currents pull against it, the seahorse wraps its tail around something steadfast and holds on. It does not defeat the current. It survives by knowing what to hold onto.

There is something deeply human in that.

Life continually pulls at us. Faith is tested. Purpose is questioned. Circumstances push us in directions we never intended to go.

And sometimes strength is not found in fighting harder.

Sometimes strength is simply knowing what must never be released.

The discarded steel within Sal y Fierro has already lived another life. It has carried pressure, heat, movement and wear. Now those same materials have been reshaped into something quieter, a creature holding steadfast while an unseen current moves around it.

Salt preserves what matters.

Iron is strengthened by what tests it.

And somewhere between calling and trial, between what we are asked to preserve and what life forces us to endure, we discover something about ourselves.

Perhaps we are not defined by the current.

Perhaps we are defined by what we refuse to let go of while passing through it.

Sal y Fierro is the meeting of calling and trial.
Of purpose and proving.
Of what preserves the soul…and what forges it.
