The Story Behind Sisyphus in Motion

We know the punishment.

Sisyphus was condemned to push a boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down before beginning again.

Forever.

But there is something about the story that has always interested me more than the punishment.

Where did he find the strength to keep pushing?

The gods may have created the hill. They may have chosen the boulder. They may have condemned him to repeat the task for eternity.

But every time that stone rolled back down, Sisyphus still had to put his hands against it and push again.

That is where I see the human spirit.

I intentionally chose an irregular stone for Sisyphus in Motion. We often see Sisyphus pushing a perfectly round boulder, but that isn't how life's burdens usually arrive.

Ours have edges.

They are uneven. Unpredictable. Sometimes difficult to even get a grip on.

And still, we push.

Maybe your hill is different from mine. Maybe your stone is heavier. Maybe you've watched it roll back down more times than you care to remember.

The sculpture doesn't promise that the stone will stay at the top.

That's not the story of Sisyphus.

The story I wanted to tell is about what happens when it doesn't.

You put your hands against it again.

And you push.

Industrial Composition & Artistry

Sisyphus in Motion is handcrafted from reclaimed automotive and industrial components combined with natural stone.

The steel figure is captured in the physical act of pushing against an irregular natural stone, creating a composition built around tension, weight, and movement.

Reclaimed engine pushrods, bolts, a coiled spring, and other mechanical components form the figure and structure of the sculpture. The natural stone creates a deliberate contrast with the reclaimed industrial materials.

The composition rests upon a mechanical gear base, continuing the visual language of machinery and motion throughout the work.

The metal is finished with clearcoat to preserve the character and patina of the reclaimed materials.
