Contemporary Metal Sculpture by Enrique Del Angel
The Persistence of Life Through Time began as a drawing and a challenge. Enrique Del Angel wanted to create a Memento Mori, but he wanted it to be one that would invite discovery rather than reveal everything at first glance.
At the center is a deer skull surrounded by antlers and thriving cacti. The skull represents death, but the antlers create an unexpected gesture. Their sweeping form appears almost like an embrace, as if Death itself is inviting the viewer closer, encouraging them to take a bite out of life.
Around it, the cacti are doing exactly that.
They grow. They flower. They thrive.
Even alongside death, life persists.
One element remained unresolved as Del Angel developed the sculpture: time.
Then the answer appeared in something mechanical and familiar.
A timing chain.
Placed at the bottom of the sculpture, the automotive timing chain and gears can easily be overlooked. That is intentional. Del Angel often hides meaning in plain sight, allowing details to reveal themselves slowly and become part of the conversation surrounding the work.
The timing chain forms a circle beneath everything else because time is not simply the end of the story. It is the foundation of the entire cycle.
There is time before life.
Time during life.
Time at death.
And time after death.
Above that circle, life continues to grow.
Memento Mori. Memento Vivere.
The Persistence of Life Through Time carries both ideas.
Memento Mori. Remember that you will die.
Memento Vivere. Remember to live.
The deer skull acknowledges mortality, while the flowering cacti remind us that recognizing death does not diminish life. It gives life urgency. The antlers seem to draw the viewer inward, toward the living forms growing among them.
Death is present, but so is the invitation:
Take a bite out of life while you can.
And beneath it all, almost hidden in plain sight, time continues its cycle.
