The Story Behind The Rock Climber

Sometimes the things intended to bring us down become the very things we use to rise.

The Rock Climber came from that thought.

People throw things at us throughout life. Anger. Criticism. Rejection. Hardship. Sometimes the stones are figurative. Sometimes what they leave behind feels very real.

We can stand beneath them.

Or we can climb.

The figure in The Rock Climber doesn't escape the rocks that were thrown at him. He uses them.

What was intended to hurt him becomes his foothold.

What was meant to stop him becomes part of the path upward.

The stone hasn't changed.

What changed was what he decided to do with it.

That idea became both the sculpture and the poem:

The Rock Climber

They casted anger and stones.
Aiming to break spirit and bones.
What they inflicted was only minor.
Use what is around you and become The Rock Climber.

Industrial Composition & Artistry

The Rock Climber is handcrafted from reclaimed automotive and industrial components combined with natural stone.

The human figure is formed from reclaimed steel and mechanical components and positioned in the physical act of climbing. Rather than standing beside the stone, the figure interacts directly with it, turning the natural rock into both the obstacle and the means of ascent.

The sculpture rests upon a reclaimed mechanical gear base, bringing together natural stone and industrial steel in a compact composition.

The metal is finished with clearcoat to preserve the character and patina of the reclaimed materials.
