The Story Behind The Violin

I enjoy classical music.

Sometimes the reason for creating a sculpture really is that simple.

The Violin began with my appreciation for the instrument, its shape, its elegance, and the music it can create.

I recreated that familiar form using materials from a completely different world. Automotive timing chain, gears, sprockets, steel, and copper replace the wood and strings of a traditional violin.

But just as important as the metal is the negative space between it.

That space isn't empty.

It is intentionally left open for the viewer.

Music has an extraordinary ability to move through our memories. A melody can bring back a person. That person can lead to a place. A place can awaken another memory, and suddenly something heard in the present has carried us years into the past.

Those memories can roam through the negative space of the sculpture, meeting, overlapping, and sometimes colliding with one another.

The violin itself will never make a sound.

But perhaps when you look at it, you'll hear something anyway.

Not necessarily what I hear.

Something that belongs to you.

Industrial Composition & Artistry

The Violin is handcrafted from reclaimed automotive and industrial components, transforming mechanical materials into the recognizable form of a classical stringed instrument.

Automotive timing chain defines the sweeping outer contours of the violin while preserving intentional negative space throughout the body. Mechanical gears, transmission components, and sprockets create layers within the composition without completely closing that space.

Steel and copper elements form the neck and strings, leading upward to the decorative scroll at the top of the instrument.

A separate steel bow accompanies the violin, and the sculpture is supported by a perforated steel disc base.

The metal is finished with clearcoat to preserve the different textures and character of the reclaimed materials.
