The Story Behind Torque & Tines

There are storms in life that leave us changed.

They break things. They take things from us. And sometimes, no matter how badly we want to, we cannot put everything back exactly as it was.

Torque & Tines is a Memento Mori—a reminder of mortality—but death is not where its story ends.

The deer skull has been reconstructed from the broken and discarded pieces of another existence. Connecting rods become bone. Valve springs and engine lifters become anatomy. A transmission bearing, sheet steel, and other mechanical remnants are gathered together and given a new form.

Yet the skull was intentionally not made perfect.

Its fragmented construction remains visible because sometimes we don't get all the pieces back.

Life can leave us scarred, incomplete, and permanently changed. We lose people. We lose relationships. We lose dreams. Sometimes we even lose physical pieces of ourselves. There are storms after which becoming exactly who we were before is simply no longer possible.

So we become someone new.

And that is where the deer begins to run.

Despite everything it has lost, its antlers remain proudly upon its head—its crown still intact. Its head is held high. It does not hide the pieces that were broken or pretend the storm never happened.

It simply moves forward.

There is something deeply human in that.

We gather whatever pieces remain. We carry the scars of what happened. We accept that some pieces may never return.

Then we pick ourselves up...

and run.

Still carrying our crown.
Still holding our head high.
Still moving forward.

Because after the storm, the human spirit does what it has always done.

We keep going.
