Where the Iron Rests began with a Western-themed exhibition and evolved into a reflection on history.
Created for RTown Gallery's YeeHaw exhibition, Enrique Del Angel initially envisioned a metal axe resting across deer antlers. As the sculpture developed, however, his thoughts moved beyond the American West and toward the deeper history of the lands connected to his roots in Veracruz, Mexico.
For centuries, Indigenous peoples of the region shaped stone into tools essential to everyday life. With the arrival of Europeans, iron tools eventually became increasingly prevalent, marking a profound transition in materials, technology, and time.
That transition became the inspiration behind the sculpture.
The metal axe resting upon the antlers represents a moment between those worlds—stone giving way to iron, one era yielding to another.
And there, the iron rests.
